“Whatever you’re smiling about, I want to be part of that, Faith.” With a single hand, Jake eased the clumsy coffee pot from her arms and coiled the wire around the base. He took a step forward, breaching the threshold of her home by inches. “Whatever is broken, I’ll try to fix—”

“No.” To stop his forward progression, Faith placed her free hand on his chest, the steady drum of his heart against her palm tempting her to lean forward and inhale the scent of a sexy man. “You’d be a fool to waste your time on this model. It’s never going to be right.”

“One man’s junk is another’s treasure. I’m a treasure-seeking kind of guy…” Stepping up, so his body filled the doorway, he loomed, the heat of his thigh easing between hers, and her gown arched over his jeans. “And something about this weekend feels right.”

A subtle moan escaped her. Strength emanated from him, his will as she’d witnessed during the delicate surgery he’d performed was inescapable. To be neurosurgeon, he had to be brave. Braver than she could ever be. But could he learn to truly trust what he couldn’t see? Spirits whom would continue to appear and attempt to aide him when she wasn’t there to intercede? “You’re a man of science…”

“What if I am? Does that solely define me?”

No. Whether she was nurse, a woman from a foggy coastal town, or something else all together, she had many facets. He held her stare like he was waiting for an answer that she could not explain. Finally, she said, “No. You can be many things, but some aren’t as desirable as the others. What if after you’ve spent precious hours—hours you’ll never get back—you grow tired and toss away what never had a chance?” Her vision blurred and she turned away. Pull it together. You deserve to be happy and to find love again.

Shifting the coffee pot and the cup he held, he set them both on the hand-carved oak floor. He took her cup, too, and repeated his action. Then, with a gentle hand, he turned her chin, so she faced him again. “I need to know you,” he said. “But I can’t do that unless you let me in.”
